Euonymus europaeus ‘Red Cascade’

Plant of the month: November

Euonymus europaeus ‘Red Cascade’

This plant a member of the Celastraceae family and can be found in the bed by the bandstand.

It’s more commonly known as the Spindle Tree and is a broadly conical deciduous shrub that reaches 3m in height. The leaves are green throughout the summer until the weather cools and then they become the most spectacular bright red. This change coincides with the red spherical lobed fruit appearing – as these split open they reveal the orange seeds.

Many spindle trees have lobes along the length of their stems, but they are absent on this cultivar.

They will grow in most soils in full sun or light shade. Unfortunately all parts of the shrub can cause mild stomach ache if eaten.
